Agilent 2100 Bioanalyzer

The Agilent 2100 Bioanalyzer is a microfluids-based platform replacing standard gel electrophoresis for RNA sample QC, DNA fragment analysis, and SDS-page electrophoresis for proteins.

The small volume allows you to conserve valuable sample and with a 30 minute run-time per chip you will be able to determine the quality and quantity of up to 12 total RNA samples and 11 small RNA samples. The analysis will include graphic visualization of ribosomal peaks (23S and 16S) or (28S and 18S), ribosomal ratio, RNA concentration, a calculated RIN (RNA Integrity Number) value, and a gel-like image RNA sample. Although the Bioanalyzer analysis will quantitate RNA samples, in our experience RNA readings are more accurate using the NanoDrop ND-1000 UV-Vis Spectrophotometer which we provide for each sample submitted. NanoDrop is also available as a separate service for both RNA, DNA, and protein quantitation.

For a more complete list of applications to meet your research needs. At this time the Bioanalyzer 2100 in the core facility is not equipped with a flow cell needed for cell fluorescence analysis.

Sample Submission Instructions

Preparation of samples:

Submit a minimum 5ul of each sample in an RNase/DNase free eppendorf tube. We will check the OD of your sample before running it on a chip.  It is often best to submit no more than 5ul to eliminate the need to pick up remaining sample.

Recommended sample concentrations:

HS DNA: (for extremely dilute samples) 5-500pg/ul
DNA: 20-100 ng/ul (size range 25-1000bp)

Total RNA or mRNA: 25-500 ng/ul
Small RNA: 10-100 ng/ul

Dropoff, Data Delivery, and Shipping Information

  • Samples that arrive prior to 3:00 PM will be processed within the following 2 working days (excluding weekends and OUHSC holidays/closings). You will receive a PDF containing your data.
  • Place samples in the white freezer located in BRC room 1106, Monday - Friday, 8:30 - 4:30. 
  • If samples contain RNA, please ask our Admin Assistant at the front desk to alert the laboratory personnel so that we can move RNA samples to the -80 freezer.
