Associate Professor of Research Director, Laboratory for Molecular Biology and Cytometry Research
Dr. Allison Gillaspy is the director of the Laboratory for Molecular Biology and Cytometry Research (LMBCR) and an Associate Professor of Research in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. As Director of the LMBCR she is responsible for all laboratory operations, budgets, implementation of new instrumentation and management of laboratory personnel. In addition, she provides consulting for experimental design and data analysis to all faculty, students, fellows, and staff that use the LMBCR for their research. As a faculty member in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology she is involved in lecturing to graduate students on the areas of Genome Technology and molecular biology.
Before coming to the OUHSC in 1998, Dr. Gillaspy received PhD in Microbiology and Immunology from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock where she also did a brief Post Doctoral Fellowship. She first entered the field of microbial genome sequencing as a Post Doctoral Fellow at OUHSC in 1998. From 2001 – 2009 she served as Associate Director of the Genomics and Bioinformatics Core and then Director of that division. She has authored several peer-reviewed articles published in notable journals including the Journal of Bacteriology, the Journal of Industrial Microbiology and Biotechnology and the Journal of Applied Microbiology as well as articles in book titles such as the ASM Press Gram Positive Pathogens, E. coli Plasmid Vectors and the Encyclopedia of Microbiology. Her extensive research background also included serving as Director of both the Genomics and Proteomics Cores for the NIH-funded COBRE project to analyze and develop functional genomic and proteomic tools to analyze bacterial-host interactions.
Dr. Gillaspy has served as PI, CoPI or consultant on several NIH, USDA, and NSF funded whole genome sequencing and annotation projects. In addition to whole genome sequencing she now directs several human, mouse, microbial, and plant whole transcriptome and small RNA sequencing projects being performed by researchers at OUHSC and other academic institutions within the state and across the country.
