Notice of Changes to eRA Modules Log In Process

The NIH is enhancing the security of eRA modules (Commons, ASSIST, and Internet Assisted Review) to require the use of two-factor authentication through Grant reviewers are already required to have a account linked to their Commons account but NIH is rolling out this requirement for all users. Users can set up two-factor authentication through a variety of authentication methods, including text message, security key, or various authentication apps.

Beginning September 15, 2021, eRA will require all scientific account holders to use two-factor authentication through This includes all PIs and key personnel on both applications and RPPRs within 45 days of submission. Administrative accounts will not be required to authenticate through until early 2022.

We encourage all account users, including administrative users, to set up an account and two-factor authentication through as soon as possible. This process can take some time to complete and if it is not completed ahead of time, it can cause major issues with submissions. Please see this PDF for step-by-step guidance.

Please reach out to if you have any questions or concerns about this new requirement.
