Notices and Reminders

ORA Reminder: Please note that in the new SoonerTrack system, when a Key Participant on a proposal commits cost-shared effort to the project, only the Financially Responsible Department (FRD) and the Key Participant will be informed of the commitment. The cost-shared effort is listed on the Key Participant’s Compliance Form and is approved by them. Keep in mind that the Key Participant's Business Manager or the Department Approver will not have access to their Compliance Forms or, consequently, their effort commitment. Therefore, it is the Principal Investigator, their FRD, and the Key Participant's responsibility to ensure that the cost-shared effort on the grant is communicated with the Key Participant's department.

Resources Available to Researchers for Preparing NIH Data Management and Sharing Plans

OU IT has provided some resources and guidance on research data storage and costs. Please refer to the documents below that are attached.
  • Research Data Infographics (PDF)
  • Research Matrix (PDF)

IMPORTANT NOTE: Please be aware that effective for applications submitted for due dates on or after October 5, 2023, NIH will no longer require the use of the single DMS cost line item. NIH recognizes that DMS costs may be requested in many cost categories. Therefore, in line with NIH standard budget instructions, DMS costs must be requested in the appropriate cost category, e.g., personnel, equipment, supplies, and other expenses, following the instructions for the R&R Budget Form or PHS 398 Modular Budget Form, as applicable. While the single cost line item is no longer required for applications submitted for due dates on or after October 5, 2023, NIH will require applicants to specify estimated DMS cost details within the “Budget Justification” attachment of the R&R Budget Form or “Additional Narrative Justification” attachment of the PHS 398 Modular Budget Form, pursuant to the instructions. For more information, please see https://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-23-161.html. For applications submitted before October 5, 2023, you are still required to include the “Data Management and Sharing Costs” line item under F. Other Direct Costs on the R&R Budget Form.

Drawing a Blank? Samples Can Get You Started!

If you are new to writing grant applications, sometimes seeing how someone else has presented their idea can help as you are developing your own application. With the gracious permission of successful investigators, some institutes have provided samples of funded R01, R03, R15, R21, SBIR/STTR, K, and F applications, sharing plans, leadership plans, and more. They have even provided sample summary statements so you can know what to expect to receive as the outcome of the review of your application.

2023 OSCTR Pilot Grants Program

Description: The Oklahoma Clinical and Translational Science Institute (OCTSI) and Oklahoma Shared Clinical and Translational Resources (OSCTR) is soliciting applications for its Clinical and Translational Research Pilot (CTRP) Grants Program. The purpose of the program is to provide funding for clinical and translational pilot projects from investigators of the OSCTR member institutions and preference is given to investigators who qualify as NIH New or Early Stage Investigators, or to investigators who are transitioning to clinical and translational research. The program seeks to support proposals designed to generate preliminary data that will result in improved health and/or health outcomes for citizens of Oklahoma and other IDeA states and enhance the competitiveness of the investigator for future extramural funding. The program also seeks to fund innovative concepts, approaches, and methodologies that bring fresh new ideas to solving the health issues of those living in Oklahoma and collaborating IDeA states. Projects that focus on the medically underserved and on health concerns prevalent within Oklahoma and our OSCTR partners will be a priority. Only projects which meet the NIH definition of clinical and/or translational research will be accepted.
The forms, instructions, and submission link can be found at:  http://osctr.ouhsc.edu/pilots2023. Deadline: Friday, September 15, 2023 at 5:00 PM CDT. Once-a-year NIH SBIR Contract Solicitation from NIH (PHS-2024-1)

Any OUHSC researcher interested in commercializing their research should look at this once-a-year solicitation.  It relates to one of the following specific areas listed below. The once-a-year NIH SBIR Contract Solicitation will soon be coming out and from prior experience of other investigators it is often the single easiest SBIR award mechanism to get a fundable score. This is not the normal, more academic NIH SBIR, the contract proposals don’t go through the Center for Scientific Review (CSR).  The awards directly fund what NIH program managers want to fund. So if, you are interested in launching a startup, securing SBIR funding, and there is a topic in the list below that matches your area of interest, this could be a great opportunity. If any faculty are interested they can contact John Hanak (jhanak@ou.edu), the Chief Innovation and Corporate officer that oversees these activities on the OUHSC, OU-Norman, and OU-Tulsa campuses. He will be able to get you in touch with the OK Catalyst team and they will help you through the process.
