Workshops and Seminars

OK Symposium on Pancreatic Cancer Cachexia
OU Health Stephenson Cancer Center is proud to host the OK Symposium on Pancreatic Cancer Cachexia on August 25-26, 2023 at the Colcord Hotel in Oklahoma City.
The purpose of this symposium is to advance the understanding of the basis of pancreatic cancer cachexia and enhance research collaborations on pancreatic cancer. Pancreatic cancer and cancer cachexia are under-studied areas that have drawn much attention in the last few years. Funded by the Presbyterian Health Foundation and the NCI designated OU Health Stephenson Cancer Center at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, this multidisciplinary symposium will provide a unique opportunity to catalyze interactions among invited speakers and local investigators through sharing ideas, research discoveries, and challenges towards advancing the field of pancreatic cancer cachexia. The meeting will highlight speakers from many premier research institutions in the nation, and local speakers from several institutions within the state. The topics to be covered will feature cutting edge technologies, new animal models and novel discoveries on pancreatic cancer cachexia. Specifically: muscle wasting, adipose loss, cross talk between muscle and adipose and tumor cells, inflammation, metabolism, extracellular vesicles, microRNAs, cytokines, and pancreatic cancer metastasis.

Omics for the Biomedical researcher workshop

This fall we are planning on having a workshop where we will teach biomedical researchers how to perform basic informatics analysis, with a particular focus on single cell RNA sequencing. In this hands-on workshop, we will teach participants how run raw data (in the form of FASTQ files) through Cellranger, upload the data into R, process the data, and generate usable visualizations including UMAPs, Heatmaps, and volcano plots. We will also teach researchers how to perform ligand-receptor and pseudotime analysis.  These analyses will be done using bash, linux, R, and python platforms. This workshop will take place over the course of ~four months and will require the participant to attend one, four-hour session per week (12 sessions total). The course will be held in person at the Samis Center, East Boardroom. No fee will be charged for the workshop. A description of the requirements and applications materials is listed below. We anticipate accepting 10 applicants into the workshop. Applications are due by July 15th, 2023. Please send application materials to Kurt Zimmerman (kurt-zimmerman@ouhsc.edu).

Please see attached document for more complete information and the schedule of classes.
