OKLAHOMA CITY— OU Health and the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine announced Dr. Azeemuddin Ahmed, M.D., MBA, as professor and Chair of the newly established Department of Emergency Medicine in Oklahoma City at the OU College of Medicine, as well as Clinical Service Chief of Emergency Medicine at OU Health. Dr. Ahmed will oversee the department’s clinical, educational and research initiatives, advancing the academic health system’s three-part mission of clinical care, education and research.

A nationally renowned expert in emergency medicine, Dr. Ahmed will begin his role on August 18, 2025. Under his leadership, the Department of Emergency Medicine in Oklahoma City will, for the first time in over 30 years, train emergency physicians at the state's only nationally verified Level I Trauma Center. Additionally, emergency physicians will be directly employed by OU Health, strengthening clinical integration and fostering advancements in patient care, medical education, and research.

Addressing Critical Health Needs in Oklahoma

The OU Board of Regents approved the formation of the Department of Emergency Medicine in Oklahoma City in September 2024 as part of a broader expansion plan to increase medical school enrollment and address critical healthcare needs across Oklahoma.

Dr. Ahmed's new role coincides with Oklahoma and the nation preparing to mark the 30th anniversary of the Oklahoma City bombing on April 19, 1995. This tragic event highlighted the vital need for a coordinated emergency medical response and trauma care system. In its aftermath, leaders at OU Health and across the state worked together to establish Oklahoma’s trauma system, strengthening emergency care statewide.

Experience Will Underscore OU Health’s Important Role

Dr. Ahmed comes to Oklahoma from the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine, where he served as clinical professor and executive vice chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine. He has over 20 years of academic and clinical expertise.

At the University of Iowa, he founded and directed the Division of Emergency Medical Services and the Emergency Medical Services Fellowship. He served as the medical director for Kinnick Stadium and Carver Hawkeye Arena as well as the medical director for the Bureau of Emergency Medical and Trauma Services at the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services.

A fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians and the Academy of Emergency Medical Services, Dr. Ahmed earned his medical degree from the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine and completed his residency in emergency medicine at Michigan State University. He also holds an MBA from the University of Iowa Tippie College of Business
